Coloring Gray Hair

Every woman deals with grey hair differently. Some embrace their silver locks and wear it with honor. Other women are not so thrilled with gray hair and they fight it will everything that they’ve got. Unfortunately, gray hair is hard to color and it takes a lot of maintenance to keep the gray at bay.

Why Gray is so Stubborn

Gray hair is difficult to color because of one main reason. Gray hair strands are nearly colorless and because of this the texture of the gray hair strand is course and rigid. This makes it resistant to most of the over-the-counter hair dyes found in department stores and supermarkets.

Should You DIY?

Most hair care professionals recommend that you go to a salon to get your gray hair colored. This is because professional hair dyes are more effective at covering gray hair. However, while salons are the preferred method for coloring gray hair, the cost of going to a salon is too much for a lot of women to afford. Fortunately there are a few products that you can use to color your gray at home. One of these products is Revitalique from Clairol. L’Oreal’s permanent hair dyes also work well for 100 percent gray coverage.

Gray Color Maintenance

As mentioned early gray hair that has been color treated is going to need more maintenance and touch-ups then other colors of hair will need. This can be expensive to do if you go to the salon every month for touch ups. To help reduce the cost of your gray hair maintenance you may want to go to a salon to get the initial hair color and then do the touch ups at home.

Use an Exotic Color

Since grey hair is difficult to keep colored when you use a natural shade of hair coloring, you may want to use an ultra light or special effects hair color instead. Cher used this tactic to turn her graying dark hair to a platinum blond color. Special effects colors can also be used to add fun and excitement to your hair. These colors fade fast so you will need to touch them up frequently, however, they tend to be a lot less expensive then other types of hair dye.

Consider a Temporary Color

Temporary hair color is another great option for coloring gray hair. This option will allow you to experiment with a variety of hair colors without damaging your hair. If you find a color that you really like then you can always go to a professional colorist to make it a permanent change. Temporary color also allows you to create a sexy or exotic look for a special occasion without having to commit to it. Then when it is time to go back to work you can simply use a different temporary hair color to revert your hair color to a more professional shade.
