Do-It-Yourself Home Hair Color Basics

Coloring your hair at home has been a tradition for many generations of women. In the past the dyes were harsh and they did not always produce the results that were promised on the box. Luckily today’s hair coloring products are much more reliable and much kinder to our hair.

What Equipment You Will Need

If you want to color your own hair in the comfort of your own home then you will want to make sure that you have the right equipment before you open your box of hair color. First of all you will need the hair color product that you plan on using. If you have short or medium length hair then a single box of hair color should be fine. However, if you have long hair, or extra thick hair, then you may need multiple boxes of hair dye to cover all of your hair. In addition to hair dye you will also need: hair clips, a comb with a pointy tip, a washrag, towels, a garbage can, a roll of cotton, and plastic wrap.

Preparing Your Hair for Coloring

The next step for DIY home hair coloring is to shampoo your hair using a clarifying shampoo the day before you color your hair. This will remove residue and impurities from your hair and it will help your hair color to adhere to the strands of your hair. You will not want to wash or condition your hair for at least 24 hours before you color it. On the day that you color your hair avoid getting sweaty as the moisture and oils that sweat adds to your hair can interact with your hair color.

If this is the first time that you have dyed your hair, or the first time that you have used this particular product then you will want to test the product on a small piece of your hair to make sure that it produces the results that you want before you dye your entire head.

Set Up Your Equipment

When you are ready to dye your hair you will want to set up all of your equipment in a room without carpet and in a room that has adequate ventilation and a sink. This way if the dye gets on the floor it won’t ruin your flooring, you won’t have to get more than one room messy, and you won’t get sick from the fumes. When you set up your equipment you will want to place the various items near the sink so that you can reach them easily while you are dying your hair.

Dye Your Hair

To start with you will want to put on an old t-shirt so that if the dye drips it won’t ruin an expensive piece of clothing. Next drape a towel or hair cutting apron over your shoulders and tuck it around your neck to protect both your skin and your clothes. Put on the latex gloves and mix up the hair dye. Use the hair clips to segment your hair into groups. Apply the dye to each segment of hair making sure that you saturate the hair completely from root to tip.

When you have saturated all of your hair with the dye twist it up into bun or bunch and wrap your hair in plastic wrap. This will help to prevent drips and it will cut down on the fumes and skin irritation caused by the dye. Use a roll of cotton to line the bottom of the plastic wrap to protect your skin and eyes from drips.

Let the dye stand for as long as the instructions suggest and then rinse it out of your hair. Make sure that you let the water run on your hair long enough to get all of the excess dye out. Next apply the conditioner, let it sit for 1 or 2 minutes, and then rinse it out of your hair. Dry and style your hair. That’s all there is to it!
