Finding Your Hair Type
Finding your hair type will help you in many ways. First of all it
will help you to select shampoos and conditioners that will work the
best for you hair. Next it will help you to select styling products
and finishing products that will create the hair effects that you
are interested in. If you don’t know what type of hair you have then
simply follow these steps.
Finding Your Hair Type Step #1
The first step in finding your hair type is to determine the
condition of your hair. There are three different hair condition
types: dry, oily, and normal. Dry hair is characterized by a dull
appearance, split ends, an itchy scalp, and a crunchy feel. Oily
hair is characterized by a greasy appearance, hair strands that
clump together, and hair that sticks to your scalp. Normal hair
should be shiny, bouncy, and healthy looking.
Finding Your Hair Type Step #2
The second step for finding your hair type is to determine what
texture your hair has. The main hair textures include smooth and
course. Smooth hair is generally associated with straight hair and
slightly wavy hair. It is generally shiny. Course hair is usually
associated with ethnic hair. Course hair can be shiny, however, it
may also have a matte appearance.
Finding Your Hair Type Step #3
The third element of your hair type is whether your hair is color
treated or not-color treated. If your hair is color treated then
your hair is going to have special care requirements. For example it
will need hair care products that are designed to reduce fading and
to improve moisture and texture.
Finding Your Hair Type Step #4
The fourth element of your hair’s type is what color your hair is.
Hair can be classified as a blonde, a brown, a black, a red, or a
specialty color. It is important to add your hair’s color to its
type because each color needs special color boosters to protect the
color from fading and to protect the color from tonal changes.
Finding Your Hair Type Step #5
Now that you know the four different elements of your hair, you can
now determine what hair type you have. To figure out your hair’s
type simply put steps 1 through 4 together. For example you may have
dry, course, color treated, black hair, or you may have normal,
smooth, color treated, blonde hair.
Finding Your Hair Type Step #6
The final step for finding your hair type is optional. This step is
only intended for people who have combination hair. When you are
going through steps 1 through 4 you may find that your hair doesn’t
fit into a single category. For example in step number 1 your hair
may be oily one day and dry the next. To define the most accurate
hair type you need to define your hair as combination hair instead
of as only dry or as only oily.
