Beginner’s Guide to Hair Color
Dying your hair is not as simple as buying a box of hair color at
the supermarket and applying it to your hair. Before you dye your
hair you need to understand the various products that are on the
market, what certain products are designed to do, and how to select
the right products for your hair. With this knowledge you will be
able to make better product selections and you will create better
results.
Beginner’s Guide to Hair Color – Tip #1
The first thing that you need to learn about hair color is that it
comes in several different varieties. The first type of hair dye is
permanent color hair dye. This is the type of hair color that most
people are familiar with. It comes in a variety of shades, it is
great for covering gray hair, it lasts until your hair grows out,
and it typically needs to be touched up every 6 weeks or so
depending on how fast your hair grows.
The second type of hair color is semi-permanent color. This type of
hair dye is only used to darken hair color. This product needs to be
touched up every 6 weeks just like a permanent hair color does.
Semi-permanent hair dye is also used to darken hair. This type of
dye will gradually wash out, however, you can maintain the color by
reapplying the color as it fades. This is the gentlest type of hair
coloring product as it only contains a small amount of peroxide and
it contains no ammonia.
New products to the DIY hair coloring aisle are glossing and glazing
hair color products. These products are used to change the tone of a
hair color using a semi-permanent color. Clear glosses and glazes
are also available. Instead of changing your hair’s color these
products are used to add shiny to your hair.
Beginner’s Guide to Hair Color – Tip #2
When you are selecting a hair color you need to consider what effect
you are trying for. If you want a natural look then you need to
select a hair color that will compliment your skin tone and eye
color. Not everyone is born with the perfect hair color for their
skin tone, so trying to select a color that is similar to your
natural color is not always going to produce the best results. If
you don’t know what color to select then you can use a hair color
wheel, or ask your hair stylist for a recommendation.
Beginner’s Guide to Hair Color – Tip #3
Don’t go too light or too dark. The most common mistake that people
make when choosing a hair color is that that pick a shade that is
either too dark or too light for their age and skin tone. To avoid
making this mistake try to avoid extreme colors when trying for a
natural look. Instead pick a color tone that has a medium color
value.
Beginner’s Guide to Hair Color – Tip #4
If you are trying for an extreme look then you can use a special
effects hair color. These colors are the non-natural colors that
have become very popular with kids and wild personalities over the
last several years. The special effects hair colors come in a
variety of outrageous shades such as Bombshell Red and Peacock Blue.
To get the best results with these colors you will need to bleach
your hair first and then dye it.
