All About Highlights
Highlights can be a great way to make yourself look younger, sexier,
and trendier. They can also be used to reduce the amount of upkeep
that you have to do to maintain your hair color. This is because
highlights break up you base color with lighter blocks of color. If
you are interested in adding highlights to your base color then you
first need to learn the basics about highlights.
Selecting Highlight Colors
The color of your highlights can either reflect shades of your base
color or they can be based on completely different colors of hair.
When you are deciding what colors to use for your highlights you
first need to decide what type of look you are after. If you want a
natural look then you will want to select colors that compliment
your base color. On the other hand, if you want a wilder and more
exciting look then you will want to select colors that are bold and
that stand out against your base color.
Selecting a Highlight Product
There are lots of hair color products that you can use to create
highlights in your hair. The first product is permanent hair color.
Simply select a shade that is lighter than your base color and then
apply it to the areas where you want highlights, leaving the areas
of your base color bear where you don’t want highlights. Next you
can buy a highlight kit. These kits are usually packaged for blonde
hair, brown hair, and red hair, and they include everything that you
need to create professional looking results.
Using Other Types of Products to Highlight Your Hair
In addition to using hair dye to add highlights to your hair you can
also use natural products to add color and dimension to your base
color. Lemon juice and sun shine are the two most effective ways to
naturally lighten your hair. Using this method of hair lightening
will naturally brighten your hair and expose your natural
highlights. Kool-aid can also be used to add bright color highlights
to your hair’s base color.
Where to Apply Highlights
When you apply highlights to your hair you will want to follow the
instructions on your product’s box. Highlight kits will generally
include a special comb that will help you isolate strands of hair
for lightening. When you are ready to highlight your hair mix up
your lightener and then apply it to the top layer of your hair only.
Focus the highlights around your face and around the crown of your
head. To get even highlights in the back of your head you may need
to have a friend or family member help you out.
Caring for Your Highlights
Just like any type of hair color treatment, your highlights will
need to be touched up periodically. However, they won’t need as much
attention as your base color will need. Highlights will only need to
be touched up when your roots become visible, or when you recolor
your hair’s base color.
