Tips for Maintaining Your Hair Color
Hair color is going to change over time no matter if you have
untreated hair or color treated hair. The natural color of your hair
changes over time due to changes in your body’s chemistry and
because of exposure to the elements and to pollution. Aging also
changes your hair color. If you have light hair it will naturally
darken as you grow older, especially right before it turns grey. If
you have dark hair then your hair is going to show signs of grey
earlier then people with light hair. If you color your hair then you
are going to see the color fade and change tonalities as the weeks
go by. If you want to maintain the color of your hair then you
should follow these tips.
Maintaining Your Hair Color – Tip #1 Stick to a Hair Coloring
Schedule
If you color your hair then you are probably familiar with the
fading, brassiness, and tonality changes that your hair goes through
every time you wash it. The best way to maintaining the original
color that you died your hair with is to establish a hair coloring
schedule based on the longevity of the hair dye that you used. For
example if you used a permanent hair dye then you will need to touch
up your roots or refresh your color every 4 to 6 weeks depending on
how fast your hair grows.
Maintaining Your Hair Color – Tip #2 Use the Right Shampoo
Cleaning your hair with a harsh shampoo can strip the color from
your hair. To reduce the fading caused by shampooing you should use
a shampoo that is designed for color treated hair. You may also want
to use a shampoo that is designed for the color of your hair.
Typically these color-specific shampoos are separated into shampoos
for blondes, brunettes, and red heads.
Maintaining Your Hair Color – Tip #3 Avoid Direct Sun
You are probably aware that sunlight fades color. What you may not
know is that it also fades hair color. If you want to naturally
lighten your hair then you can simply stand out in the sun. However,
most people don’t want the sun to fade their hair. To protect your
hair from sun fading you can use a spray in conditioner that has SPF
added to it, you can wear a hat, or you can stay in the shade.
Maintaining Your Hair Color – Tip #4 Use Highlights to Camouflage
Fading
Highlights are a great way to extend the life of your hair color.
While your base color may fade at a normal rate when you have
highlights, the highlights will break up the base color enough to
make it more difficult to notice the fading. If you don’t want to
color your hair every month then you can use highlights to extend
the time between hair coloring to two months or longer.
