Caring for Nails
Caring for your nails is important. Proper nail care will keep your
nails looking great, and it will also prevent serious nail
conditions from developing. If you are interested in proper nail
care then try these tips.
Caring for Nails Tip #1 – Trim Nails Properly
The first thing that you need to learn about caring for your nails
is how to trim them properly. For your toenails you will want to cut
them straight across. This will prevent them from developing ingrown
toenails. For women’s fingernails you will want to cut them straight
across and then file them down to shape them. For men’s fingernails
simply cut them straight across and then file the sharpness from the
edges. Don’t round off men’s fingernails.
Caring for Nails Tip #2 – File Your Nails Properly
Filing your nails helps to shape and smooth out your nails. Many
women use a back and forth motion when filing their nails. This is a
mistake. You should only file your nails in one direction. This will
help to preserve the nail’s strength. You also don’t want to file
your nails right after bathing or showering. Wet nails, like wet
hair, are weak. If you try to file wet nails they will most likely
tear or rip.
Caring for Nails Tip #3 – Strengthen Your Nails with Biotin
If you have brittle nails then you may want to start taking Vitamin
B Biotin. This compound with help to fortify your nails and it will
make them stronger. The recommended dosage for Biotin is four to six
daily doses of about 300 micrograms.
Caring for Nails Tip #4 – Take Your Calcium
Calcium is another nutrient that your nails need to be healthy. A
simple glass of low fat, or fat free milk, is all the extra calcium
you need for healthy nails. If you don’t care for milk, then you can
also get calcium from a dietary supplement, or from certain
vegetables.
Caring for Nails Tip #5 – Add a Little Zinc to Your Diet
If your nails have white spots or stripes then chances are your body
is low in zinc. To provide your body with the correct amount of zinc
you will need to eat foods rich in this mineral, or you will need to
find a multi-vitamin that offers this ingredient.
Caring for Nails Tip #6 – Protect Your Nails
To protect your fingernails you should wear latex gloves when
washing the dishes or when your hands come in contact with cleaning
chemicals. To protect your toenails you will want to wear 100
percent cotton socks, and you will want to wear shoes that do not
pinch or put pressure on your toes.
